(Answer) (Category) The Texas Regional Hostmaster FAQ : (Category) Help for Private and Public Schools, City and County Governments and Community Colleges :
What entities qualify for the K12 domain names?
In New Jersey, those entities that qualify are those that are listed by the New Jersey Department of Education as public K12 school districts. Only school districts are eligible for the k12.nj.us domain name. Accredited private schools may apply for a domain name with the suffix pvt.k12.nj.us or they may choose to use a name with a locality suffix (e.g. newark.nj.us), but the Texas Regional Hostmaster does not handle any locality registrations in New Jersey. Charter schools are public schools that operate independently of a district board of education. A special suffix of charter.k12.nj.us is available for them to use. Individual schools may not register directly for a k12.nj.us name. They must register through their district. Recognized schools are listed on the New Jersey Department of Education web site at http://www.state.nj.us/njded/directory.

In Texas, those entities that qualify are those that are listed by the Texas Education Agency as public K12 school districts. Only school districts are eligible for the k12.tx.us domain name. Accredited private schools may apply for a domain name with the suffix pvt.k12.tx.us or they may choose to use a name with a locality suffix (e.g. dallas.tx.us), but the Texas Regional Hostmaster does not handle all locality registrations in Texas. Charter schools are public schools that operate under a specific contract (or charter) granted by the TEA or a specific ISD board. A special suffix of charter.k12.tx.us is available for them to use. Individual schools may not register directly for a k12.tx.us name. They must register through their district. Recognized schools are listed on the Texas Education Agency web site at http://askted.tea.state.tx.us.
